So, the first thing that we are gonna talk about today is the setting of the book: The Oathbreaker’s Shadow. Setting is not one of the modern novels’ (at least the ones that I have read) strong suit, and this novel well… doesn't have a very good one. You can sense that the the author (Amy McCulloch) didn’t put a lot of effort into describing the setting. For example in the first couple of paragraphs, I thought that they were situated in a vast desert with very little grasslands and rivers. It turns out that they were in a large grassy area filled with trees and rivers flowing everywhere (I only found that out by looking at the map at the front of the book). I wish that the author put more effort into the setting because I had to go as far as inferencing to get a picture of the setting in my head. Not very good if you ask me.
Next, we’ll talk about the characters and to be honest, their great. There is such a diversity between characters and the way that they are described that you always have a clear picture in your head of the characters. Even the emotions are well described. However, there isn’t a lot known on the characters past. There is just a tiny bit on the characters parents and how Raim (main character) and Khareh (in line to be ruler) got to know each other. Another thing that I was unhappy about was that there were way too many characters to keep track of. I had to look back multiple times to remember who was who. So far, not looking so good.
Now, for the final topic of the day: theme. The theme of this book is pretty obvious as it is in the title. Thats right you guessed it! Honesty, Trust and respect are the main themes of this novels because when you make a promise, you are bound to it for life. This whole book revolves around that rule and it certainly would be different without it. If you break a promise to someone, it no only shows that you are untrustworthy, it shows that you have no sense of respect for the person that you made your promise to. Along with a promise that he had no recollection of making, Raim had to make a promise that would change his life and the life of his best friend.
Well, thats it for today! if you want to see the rest of my blog you’re going to have to wait until tomorrow when i cover the plot, the voice and i give a summary of the book with a rating so, I’ll see you next time!
